What Is Kaal Sarpa Yoga?
Kaal means time or death, and sarpa means snake. Rahu is regarded as the head of the snake and Ketu as its tail, which gives this yoga its name. When every planet falls on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis, the yoga is complete and considered most inauspicious. If even one planet lies on the other side, it is partial and its effects are much milder.
Astrologers disagree about this yoga. Some argue that it is a modern idea because it is not mentioned by name in the ancient texts; others believe the same combination is described there under different names. Either way, its effects depend heavily on the rest of the chart.
Possible Effects
The effects vary greatly from person to person. Commonly described effects include setbacks at work or in business, loss of confidence, mental stress, and health problems. A person under this yoga may worry even when there is no real cause, relationships can become strained, friends may prove unreliable, and support from family may be lacking.
The Twelve Types of Kaal Sarpa Yoga
There are twelve types, named after the house in which Rahu is placed. Three of the best known are:
- Anant Kaal Sarpa Yoga – Rahu in the 1st house (Lagna) and Ketu in the 7th. The person may lose their temper easily, face plots and schemes, and develop habits that harm their health and reputation; relations with the spouse and business partners may suffer.
- Kulik Kaal Sarpa Yoga – Rahu in the 2nd house (wealth) and Ketu in the 8th. It can bring financial loss, harsh speech and many enemies, and it is traditionally associated with risk from accidents or poisoning.
- Vasuki Kaal Sarpa Yoga – Rahu in the 3rd house (courage and younger siblings) and Ketu in the 9th (luck). The person may be timid, may not get along with younger siblings, may find that luck does not favour them, and may be drawn to religions other than their own.
The other nine types are Shankhpal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkotak, Shankhachud, Ghatak, Vishdhar and Sheshnag.
Remedies
Several traditional remedies are recommended to reduce the effects of Kaal Sarpa Yoga: worshipping Lord Hanuman or Lord Shiva, performing the Kaal Sarpa (Naag) Dosha Nivaran puja, feeding fish or ants, and wearing a snake-shaped ring on the middle finger. Consult an astrologer before choosing a remedy, because a partial yoga may need little or no treatment.
